This is work was made at very much the same time as the 3-dimensional blocks that are present in Paolozzi famous “Newton” bronze (1988) and “Maxima ad Minima”  in Kew Gardens. Nearing the end of the 20th century Paolozzi was influenced by, amongst many other things, the original architectural setpiece of Fritz Lang's 'Metropolis'. He was to produce many plaster casts of the skyscrapers. This work presented here very much belongs to this architectural theme whilst also harkening back to the Vorticist designs of Wyndham Lewis, Cuthbert Hamilton and Edward Wadsworth that heralded the start of the 20th century.
