A study of the artist’s daughter Poppet

Pencil on cream paper, 19 1/2" x 13 1/4"

Signed: John

This sketch has been torn into four pieces and is said to have been done by the artist himself in a fit of rage against his model.

“Augustus was celebrated first for his brilliant figure drawings, and then for a new technique of oil sketching. His work was favourably compared in London with that of Gauguin and Matisse. He then developed a style of portraiture that was imaginative and often extravagant, catching an instantaneous attitude in his subjects."

He studied at Slade School of Art (1896-99) and with his sister Gwen John in Paris. John became a leading figure of the avant-garde in the Edwardian period and was noted for his flamboyant personality. Favourite themes for his painting included gypsies and coastal scenes whilst his portraits concentrate on unique items of beauty and dignity.
