“Head of a Dongon Mask”

Modelled plaster

h: 33 cm

PROVENANCE:

Artist’s Estate;

Robin Katz, London

This work harkens back to the work Paolozzi exhibited in his very first show in 1946 at the Mayor Gallery. Fascinated by primitive art and under the influence of Picasso, he exhibited sculptures of birds, fish and animals in plaster, concrete and bone.

This work's "primitive" nature is closely related to the 1946 bronze "Horse's Head" exhibited at the Mayor gallery, whilst also mimicking Picasso's "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" and its African inspired artifice.
